Program Description: We live in a culture where art is viewed as interesting or important to a very few--and select--group of people. The San Francisco Art Institute stands as a challenge to that idea, fostering an understanding that the work of the artist is an essential part of society in which everyone has a stake. So many important movements in 20th century art were nurtured here--fine art photography, experimental filmmaking, Abstract Expressionism, Bay Area figurative painting, funk, and Conceptualism. While we understand these movements as individual works from individual artists, we also now experience them as something more, as the image of events, of whole eras, and even of history proper.
